Remembering Kahoolawe

May 6, 2017

Seven Mākena employees were given the extraordinary opportunity to visit the uninhabited island of Kahoʻolawe and join in the conservation efforts of the nonprofit, Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana. Our Vice President of Development, Kaimi Judd looks back on his extraordinary experience:

“It’s been two weeks since I first stepped foot on Kahoʻolawe and I’ve had an inexplicable sense of calm ever since I’ve been back. This feeling is completely contrary to the experience and the constant dichotomy of pain and healing one experiences each day there - to see how scarred the island became through the decades of bombing, the plastic that piles on the shore daily and yet being a small part of the slow but promising process of cleanup and restoration. It was humbling and inspirational on many levels. We had a challenging exit after flash floods, sharks in the water and strong and cold onshore wind and waves...Kanaloa made us remember...and I want to go back to continue the connection, the education, and the healing.”

Mahalo to the Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana for inviting us to experience Kahoolawe. We look forward to more future trips to the beloved Kanaloa.
