On Monday March 6th, the Makena Golf & Beach Club hosted the first annual Makena Celebrity Cook Off . Spearheaded by Makena members Tamar Goodfellow and Karen Williams, the Cook-Off began began as an auction item that was purchased by 35 individuals at a fundraiser held at Spago late last year. The auction item raised $35,000 for the Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation, which supports the needs of Maui’s only hospital by purchasing state-of-the-art life-saving equipment, funding training and education for clinical staff, and sponsoring community outreach and patient assistance programs.

Guests were divided into teams of six, each led by a celebrity chef. Participating chefs included: Makena Chef Chris Kulis, Chef Sheldon Simeon of Tin Roof, Chef Spike Mendelsohn from Béarnaise in Washington DC, Chef Nick Mastrascusa from Kuki’o, Chef Jojo Vasquez from The Plantation House, and Chef Jeff Scheer from The Mill House. The winning team was led by Chef Nick Mastrascusa, and they received a specially engraved Cuisinart stainless steel skillet to display proudly (until next year!) Judges included Mayor Alan Arakawa, Chef Bev Gannon, hospital board member Tony Takitani and MMMC Foundation Executive Director Lisa Varde.
“We sincerely appreciate Makena Golf & Beach Club’s amazing generosity,” said MMMC Foundation Executive Director Lisa Varde. “It comes at a time when the hospital needs the support of our community more than ever, as we transition to new management on July 1. With the purchase of new life-saving equipment, we are now able to treat more patients right here on Maui when only a few years ago, many would have needed to be flown to Oahu for care. Makena Golf & Beach Club has helped make that possible.”
We are honored to host this worthwhile community event and support Maui's only hospital, Maui Memorial Medical Center.
